Step-by-Step Guide: Smoke Alarm Still Beeping After Battery Replacement
We recently dealt with this ourselves, and surprisingly, the instruction manual didn’t cover some of these common fixes. This applies to hardwired Kidde smoke and carbon monoxide alarm units (smoke + CO combo).
**1. Replace the batteries properly**
* Remove the old batteries
* With the battery compartment empty, press and hold the test/reset button for at least 2 seconds
* Install new batteries, ensuring correct orientation
**2. Still beeping? Clear dust and reset again**
* Remove the batteries again
* Press and hold the reset button
* Blow air into the sensor vents to clear out dust or debris
* Reinstall batteries
**3. Check the age of the unit**
* Twist the alarm counterclockwise to remove it from the base (wiring can stay connected)
* Look for the manufacturing date on the back
* If the unit is 10 years old or more, replacement is recommended
**4. Perform a full reset**
* Disconnect the alarm from the wiring harness (usually a 3-prong clip)
* Remove batteries
* Press and hold the test/reset button for 15+ seconds to discharge any remaining power
* Reconnect and reinstall batteries
**Why not disconnect everything first?**
Because most issues can be resolved with simpler steps, and not everyone is comfortable removing a hardwired unit. This approach works from least invasive to most.
**If it’s still beeping after all of this:**
At that point, the unit is likely faulty or expired and should be replaced. Submit a work order to your property management company. But NOTE if the smoke detector in deed only needed new batteries you could get charged for a maintenance visit.
