A Local Perspective on Hurricane Season

At Magnolia Coastal Properties, hurricane season is not just something we read about in the news—it's something we've lived through firsthand.

Our family has called Richmond Hill and the Savannah area home for nearly 48 years. During that time, we've experienced everything from tropical storms and flooding events to major hurricanes that impacted Coastal Georgia, including Hurricane Matthew, Hurricane Irma, Tropical Storm Debby, and Hurricane Helene. We have seen how quickly conditions can change and how important preparation is before a storm ever appears on the forecast.

One interesting fact about our area is that Georgia experiences fewer direct hurricane landfalls than neighboring Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The unique shape of the Georgia coastline, known as the "Georgia Bight," often helps steer storms away from direct landfall. In fact, Georgia has experienced relatively few direct hurricane strikes compared to other Atlantic coastal states. However, that does not mean we are immune to hurricane impacts.

What many residents have learned is that flooding, storm surge, fallen trees, and prolonged power outages often create more damage than a direct hurricane landfall. Tropical Storm Debby in 2024 demonstrated this reality when severe flooding impacted hundreds of homes throughout Bryan County and Richmond Hill, including areas that had never previously experienced flooding concerns.

Historically, Savannah and Coastal Georgia are affected by tropical systems on a fairly regular basis. While direct hurricane strikes are less common, tropical storms, hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge remain significant risks for property owners throughout our region.

The takeaway is simple: while our location may reduce the likelihood of a direct hit, every homeowner, landlord, and tenant in Coastal Georgia should prepare each year as if one storm could impact us tomorrow.
